Which Free Credit Score Site Is The Best?

Which One?

What’s that you ask…which free credit score site is the best? Well, the answer to that question depends on many things, including what your specific wants and needs are.

There are so many different sites out there offering free credit scores these days, it’s hard to know which ones are definitely worth checking out, and which ones aren’t even worth the time it takes to mention their name.

Most of them are the same service re-branded by different companies to appear unique, which is really just a clever marketing ploy to make more money. We’re not going to talk about those right now, we’re here to discuss the “best of breed” credit monitoring services, the ones that provide the best value, most features and benefits, basically the ones that are worthy of recommending to others.

Most of these services cater to a certain need such as identity theft protection, or credit score monitoring. This means the first step you need to take is to decide what your needs are, then we can direct you to the service that fits you best.

Best Free Credit Score/Identity Theft Protection Service

We believe the best overall service for the free credit score with identity theft protection is FreeScoresAndMore. Why? Well, first off they give you all 3 free credit scores, 3-bureau credit report monitoring (with e-mail alerts of key changes), and extensive identity theft protection, all with a free 30 day trial.

As a member, you can get your updated credit scores every quarter, at no extra charge. They will also scan internet black markets for signs of fraud, and immediately notify you if any suspicious activity is detected. They offer free internet security software for you to use if you wish, with free updates as long as you are a member.

This service provides free credit scores, but its central focus is identity theft protection. For more info on FreeScoresAndMore, click here.

Best Free Credit Score/Credit Score Monitoring Service

In this category, FreeCreditScore.com stands out as the go-to site. FreeCreditScore.com’s service has a focus on frequent credit score updates, and score monitoring. With them, you get your free credit score upon sign-up, with a 7 day free trial, along with 3-bureau credit report monitoring with alerts. You can view your updated Experian PLUS Score twice per month, much more frequent than most of the other credit score services.

They have great tools to track and monitor your score, and how it changes over time. You can set up alerts for when your score reaches a certain number, they will also give you helpful tips on what actions are best to take when trying to improve your score.

This service is mainly focused on credit score monitoring/tracking. For more info on FreeCreditScore.com, read our full FreeCreditScore.com review here.

Best Free Credit Score – No Credit Card Required Service

Credit Sesame is our favorite 100% free, no credit card required credit score and monitoring service.

When you sign up for your completely free Credit Sesame account, you will get your free credit score which will be updated on a monthly basis. You will also receive a basic credit monitoring service at no additional cost – while it is not nearly as feature packed as FreeScoresAndMore¬†or FreeCreditScore.com as mentioned above, it’s still a great value considering it’s free!

As great as it is at tracking and monitoring changes to your credit score, it does little else. It’s mainly focused on obtaining your free credit score and tracking the changes over time. For more info on this, read our full Credit Sesame review here or learn how to get your free credit score without a credit card.

I use Credit Sesame for the monthly free credit score and tracking, and I’m also a member of FreeScoresAndMore and love both services. FreeScoresAndMore does have a monthly fee, but I believe the benefits are worth the $14.99/month I pay for it. I love Credit Sesame, but wanted some more advanced credit monitoring features and ID theft protection, FreeScoresAndMore was able to provide that.

Sorry, I’m almost sounding like a salesman here! I just recommend giving them both a try to see how they work for you. Like the article says above, you can always cancel your Identity Guard account before the trial is up, if you don’t like it, and you won’t pay a dime!

Hi Jason, glad to see you tried out FreeScoresAndMore, and ended up liking it! I think everyone should use Credit Sesame, but I also think it’s a shame if you don’t at least give FreeScoresAndMore a try. Worst case scenario – you realize you don’t like it, then cancel it before you are billed. On the other end you could end up like me, still a member after several years! Either way at least you know!

I would also recommend Privacy Assist by Bank of America. For $12 a month you can pull all of your credit information, including scores, as often as you like. I used this service for years while I was rebuilding my credit. Once I had cleaned up all the negative information from all three bureaus, I stopped using the pay service and switched to free sites like Credit Karma and Mint to keep track of my credit and finances.

  3. Jesse Clemmer

I want to watch my credit score with all 3 credit bureaus and monitor when something gets taken off my record. I want to see how much my credit score jumps when this item is removed. Which website is the best for that? All the websites seem to monitor 1 or 2 of the 3 bureaus and I want to pay a monthly fee and see all 3. Any suggestions?

Jesse, I would recommend freecreditscore.com. They do not give you monthly updates to all 3 credit scores, but what they will do is provide 2 free credit score updates per month, based on your Experian credit report. It shouldn’t really be necessary to monitor all 3 scores, once your Experian credit report has been updated, it’s a good bet that the other two bureaus have been as well. At that point you can order all 3 credit scores from the members area to make sure all have been updated properly. In my opinion freecreditscore.com would fit your needs best since you are looking to closely monitor your score and how the changes you mentioned will affect it.

I need to find out my credit score without paying a fee to get the score. what website are available

There are three sites I would recommend for viewing your credit score without any fees or trial memberships, first is Credit Karma, second is Quizzle, and third to check out would be Credit Sesame. All give you your free credit score without any memberships or fees. However, they have to pay the bills too, so with these sites you will be presented with many different advertisements and upgrade offers.

The sites with fees associated with the service (including the services with free trials) tend to be more user friendly and you get many more features included, with some upgrade offers, but virtually no intrusive advertisements. With the completely free sites like the ones previously mentioned, they do provide your credit score for free, but the advertising to support the site is much more intrusive (and not always relevant), and they typically offer little else unless you pay for it.

Feel free to check them out and decide for yourself. They all have their advantages and disadvantages (free services, and paid services included), which one you should use depends on your needs.
